This is amazing!!!!… I just spent the last 2 hours trying to get this game to work in DosBox.

Are there any other games ported like this?

Simeon 2010-12-24 15:41:48

Strange, it’s works pretty easily in DOSBox, as long as your first delete the configuration file (curse.cfg) and then when you run, it should ask the configuration questions, and just work (tm).

I’m glad that my port worked for you however. I’m not sure of anybody else having done ports for the other games, I know people have talked about it, and I’ve started a few. But really as they work so well in DOSBox (I started before I knew of DOSBox), it was mostly for the “how they do that” and self curiosity.

Didn’t Curse of the Azure Bonds have an intro theme at one point rather than the fart sound?

Simeon 2011-11-28 19:51:57

Not in the DOS version.

Found my way back here after several years. Looking forward to trying the latest release!

i am using doxbox .74 on mac os x 10.5.8
i have the issue of not being able to save or get past the create a character at beginning. it says to insert save disk and wont stop.
i have tried to delete the CURSE.CFG file, but it just keeps recreating itself upon startup of the game!
I tried opening curse.cfg in textedit to fix it but it is blank.
how can i play?

Your path in the configuration (curse.cfg) will not match your structure of the DOS filesystem you have in your Mac’s DOSBox environment.

When you run DosBox, and you type start.exe to get the game to start the full path needs to be the third entry of your curse.cfg

Here’s the content of my curse.cfg:
E
P
C:\GAMES\COAB\SAVE\
F

also you will need to edit the file with a program that understands DOS file formats, not just Mac based text editor (the end of line markers are different)

First, let me say that your port is fantastic and words only begin to describe the amount of nostalgia you’ve unlocked. Now on to a problem I’m having- there is a character who can’t train for some reason. Everyone else in the party gained a few levels from conquering Dracandos’ tower, but I get ‘Not Enough Experience’ when I try to train my cleric. So he’s level 5 with 164K of experience. Any guidance would be immensely appreciated.

Hi Pete,

Glad you have found the port of the game, but sorry to hear it’s not working for you. Um, as long as the character is in good health, has the 1000 gold, and has the needed EXP (140K is enough for level 7) they should train.

So if all the above are good, then send me your save game files, and I’ll give it a run, and find out what’s happening, or not for you.

As a huge fan of the gold boxed games I just wanted to drop a quick thank you for keeping it alive. I am glad there is still a very live community of porting and creating new art and games by using FRUA. Your work is greatly appreciated and I hope you keep it coming with some more stuff! :)

Hi, I’ve just found your amazing port of Curse of the Azure Bonds.

I remember playing this years and years ago (back in 1990) on a 286xs 25mhz machine with 2 or 3 5.25 floppies.

Amazing job, thanks for porting this - are you ever going to port the other games?

Simeon 2013-02-01 09:36:17

I had started a Pool of Radiance port (was my original project) but lost the work in a HDD failure. There is another developer currently doing a PoR port, but he’s not made it public yet.

I never played the later games, so there is no motivation to do that myself.

Hi Simeon,
I’m experiencing the same problem as Pete regarding my cleric being stuck at level 5. I have 70k experience, but receive the same ‘not enough experience’ message when attempting to train at the hall. I have the requisite experience, gold, and he is in good health, but am not able to train. Any help would be greatly appreciated

if you could email me your save game then I can debug the fastest…
